Create vehicles

Written by Arthur Ashdown

The Vehicles in MaxOptra represent the vehicles in your fleet. Along with drivers, they will be used to create routes. To create or manage your vehicles, make sure the selected role is Account Administrator.

  1. Go to Settings> Resources> Vehicles :

  1. Click the Add button to create a new vehicle:

  1. Fill in the Name of the vehicle. Usually it is the registration number, but you can use any other name instead (like, "Vehicle 01" etc.). Note that the vehicle's name is also automatically filled out in the External ID field, which will be the vehicle's unique identifier.

  1. Select the Distribution centre this vehicle belongs to:

  1. If you want to slow down or speed up the vehicle, you can use the Driving time correction factor parameter for that:

The estimated driving time for getting from point A to point B on this vehicle will be multiplied by this number. For example, the correction factor of 1.3 will make the driving times thirty percent longer. So, if you find the MaxOptra driving time estimation is too optimistic, you can always come back here and increase the correction factor.

The default value for the correction factor comes from the settings of the distribution centre this vehicle is assigned to. You can override this value by enabling the checkbox next to this field and changing the value to something different. If you do not do that, any change you make to the correction factor on the distribution centre will affect this vehicle immediately.

  1. Choose the Cost per mile and Capacity for this vehicle.

The cost is used by MaxOptrato optimise the routes. It does not have to be accurate. However, if you have a mixed fleet of different vehicle types, you can get better planning results by making sure that larger vehicles have a higher cost per mile.

The capacity is the maximum payload this vehicle can take. By default, the vehicle capacity is limited by weight measured in kilos. However, you can change this and define your own capacity measurements on the Capacity units page.

  1. Click Save. You can assign a driver to this vehicle if you already have the drivers set up in MaxOptra. If you leave this field blank, MaxOptra will suggest creating a driver automatically:

You can also clone the newly created vehicle using the Clone button instead of going through the whole procedure again (see Cloning Vehicles).

Now your vehicles are ready for use. You can see and operate your vehicles and the assigned drivers on th Planning screen. For more details, see Planning with MaxOptra.
